Born in 1928 in Nghe An province, Dang Bich Ha, daughter of Professor Dang Thai Mai, was an Associate Professor and Doctor of History.

Together, Dang Bich Ha and General Giap raised four children: Vo Hoa Binh, Vo Hanh Phuc, Vo Dien Bien, and Vo Hong Nam. She also fostered a nurturing relationship with Vo Hong Anh - daughter of General Giap and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Quang Thai - as her own.

Despite a significant age difference, the couple were lifelong confidants, remaining closely connected until General Giap’s final days. They were noted for their modest lifestyle, handling personal matters without involving their aides.

Their residence at 30 Hoang Dieu Street, Hanoi, was known for its warmth and hospitality. Towards the end of General Giap’s life in 2009, Dang Bich Ha maintained weekly hospital visits, reducing them only when her health declined, prompting General Giap to express concern for her wellbeing.

Colonel Tran Hong, a journalist and photographer who documented many of their intimate moments, shared insights into their simple yet profound life together.

He recalled an emotional instance in October 1994, where during a modest meal of just two eggs, they showed deep care, insisting the other eat more. “After capturing that moment, I was brought to tears,” Colonel Hong reflected.

Having observed them closely over the years, Colonel Hong highlighted General Giap’s deep respect for Dang Bich Ha. When entertaining guests, he affectionately referred to her as “Chi Ha,” and more tenderly as “Em Ha” in private.

She, in turn, referred to him formally as “General Vo Nguyen Giap” in public and affectionately as “Anh Van” in their personal interactions.
