A new cave has been discovered in Quang Binh Province, north-central Vietnam, with its stalactites described as magnificent carpets.

The provincial Department of Tourism confirmed on Friday that it had received a report on the discovery of the cave in Sat Village, Truong Son Commune, Quang Ninh District by a unit specializing in exploiting cave-based tourism in the district.

The unit named the grotto as Lu. 

It later drew up a plan on community tourism in association with the cave exploration and sent the plan to the Quang Binh administration and the provincial Department of Tourism.

The unit coordinated with the management board of forests in Sat Village to undertake the second survey of the cave.

They found that the cave is two kilometers long and its entrance is eight meters high and nine meters wide.

The cave has four branches with 100 meters of dry sections, the remainder being wet.

The highest point on the cave’s ceiling is some 35 meters high. The cave also has an underground river.

Local authorities will establish a working group to assess the value of Lu Cave before weighing up exploiting it for tourism purposes.

Earlier, a cave named Son Nu had been found in Truong Son Commune.

Son Nu and Lu Caves are several kilometers from each other.

In mid-April, British and Vietnamese cave expedition experts discovered 22 caves in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Minh Hoa and Tuyen Hoa Districts, all situated in Quang Binh Province.

Quang Binh has earned the title of Vietnam’s 'Kingdom of Caves,' boasting over 400 discovered caverns.

Among them, Son Doong stands as the world's largest known cave, while En ranks as the third largest.
