Typhoon Nalgae weakens into tropical depression

On October 4 evening, typhoon Nalgae or tropical storm no. 6 – as it is termed in Vietnam – downgraded into a tropical depression after it headed towards the south of Hainan Island in China, according to the Central Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center.

At 4:00am on October 5, the depression lay centered 190 kilometers east and north-east of central coastal areas stretching from Nghe An to Quang Tri with sustained winds of 50-61 kph and gusts of 76-87 kph.

It is forecast in the next 24 hours to move west-by-southwest at 10-15 kph and will weaken into a low pressure area soon after it arrives on the mainland.

Due to the depression, coastal areas in central provinces from Quang Tri to Thua Thien Hue and in the Gulf of Tonkin will have strong winds and rough seas.

The depression would bring heavy rains to central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Nam, the local weather station said.

Meanwhile, according to a brief report from storm and flood control committee in Quang Binh central province, flooding has so far killed 5 and injured 5 and caused an estimated loss of VND38 billion in damage in the province.

On October 4, the only way to village of Ruc ethnic people in Thuong Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district in Quang Binh was submerged deeply underwater. More than 700 Ruc people are dependent on relief provided by local authorities.

Meanwhile the floodwaters in Tan Hoa commune have risen fast as the result of heavy rains over the past days.

Cao Quy Ninh, deputy chairman of Tan Hoa People’s Committee, said the province is planning to evacuate 175 local households out of flood-hit areas.
