The People's Committee of Quang Tri province has just issued Decision No. 2390/QD-UBND approving the aid for the Project "Supporting wildlife recovery in Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve" sponsored by World Land Trust (WLT).
Accordingly, the Project "Supporting wildlife recovery in Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve" with a total non-refundable aid capital of 48,310 USD, equivalent to more than 1.14 billion VND, is implemented in Kim Ngan commune, Quang Tri province. The project is being implemented to maintain efforts in forest patrolling, trap removal and biodiversity monitoring in the field to reduce the trapping and capture of wildlife in Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve, increase the number of wildlife individuals and aim to make this a safe place for the future release of the White-crested Pheasant.
It is known that Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve has a total area of over 22,210 hectares. This is a primeval tropical forest that has been assessed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as one of the 200 global biodiversity centers. There are currently 61 endangered, precious and rare wildlife species that need priority management, conservation and monitoring of changes here.
In recent times, nature conservation organizations have implemented many technical support programs to protect forests and biodiversity. Local people have been trained in guiding, cuisine, traditional culture, and the use of medicinal herbs in tourist health care; supported in implementing livelihood models of product chains, such as growing red turmeric and white cassava; developing cattle and goat breeding and planting scattered trees, and growing red lingzhi mushrooms under the forest canopy in villages and hamlets.
The implementation of this project will contribute to raising people's awareness of the importance and role of forests for villages/hamlets living near forests. Thanks to that, people have gradually understood the role and purpose of wildlife protection, the legal policies on biodiversity conservation, and have the responsibility to join hands in biodiversity conservation and forest protection, contributing to the conservation and promotion of the value of tourism resources of Quang Tri province.
