Floods left at least 18 peolpe dead, 07 missing and 13 injured

 (Quang Binh Portal) - Heavy rain that lasted from October 13 to 15 have caused serious flood on the large scale in Quang Binh province, reported the Provincial Department of Flood Prevention, Search and Rescue.

According to statistics of agencies and localities, torrential rain and floods have left at least 18 people dead (5 in Bo Trach district, 5 in Ba Don town, 2 in Quang Ninh district, 3 in Le Thuy district, 2 in Dong Hoi city and 7 in Quang Trach district), 07 missing (2 in Minh Hoa district and 5 fishers submerged in the Gianh estuary) and 13 injured (4 in Le Thuy, 3 in Bo Trach, 6 in Tuyen Hoa and 2 in Ba Don town); submerged 16 ships and missed 03 fishing boats, flooded 77,504 houses, blew up 56 roofs and destroyed 03 houses. Many are reporting that local people had to climb to the top of their homes to escape the rising waters, authorities said.

Over 80% of schools and medical clinics was engulfed in water; 1,028 hectares of aquacultures and 765 hectares of vegetables and 600 hectares of perennial trees have been damaged. 2,239 tons of foods was flooded; 73,000 cattles and 1,500 poultries were swept out by floods; 500 m of dykes was eroded; 30 km of canals was damaged; system of traffic across the Ho Chi Minh Highway, National Highway 12A, 1A was interrupted due to the rapid increase in water level, bringing landslides and erosion. Railvay across Quang Binh province has been also influenced by landslide.

The highest rainfall reached at 920.0 mm in Dong Hoi city and 950.9 mm in Ham Ninh commune. City streets were engulfed in water and impassable, several areas were without electricity. Hundreds of houses were underwater; many parts of the Ho Chi Minh highway were under two metres of water.

At present, the local authorities and functional forces have made their efforts to help residents overcome difficulties after the natural disaster. Functional forces have also tried their best to reduce the targets of poverty.
