Retired teacher opens plaster painting service for children

A retired teacher in Vietnam’s central province of Quang Binh has long been known for her plaster painting service dedicated to local children.

Dieu Thi Hiep, 58, retired from her teaching job two years ago. She has since decided to open a plaster painting service near Nhat Le Beach in Dong Hoi City in the hope of earning a living and using her free time effectively.

Hiep’s office only includes a few plastic tables and chairs where local children can carefully put color on statues of various forms and size, an activity also known as plaster painting.

“This is a beneficial activity as it helps children enhance their creativity and imagination while learning to be more patient,” Hiep explained, adding that the way children mix the color and treat the statue can reveal their personality.

Hiep’s daughter, who became interested in plaster painting after experiencing it with her friends, buys statues for her mother’s service.

“When plaster painting first appeared, many people took part because coloring statues in an airy space is quite comfortable. It attracted not only children but also adults,” Hiep recalled.

The number of customers has decreased over time since there are other entertainment options in the area. Hiep’s current visitors consist of her former students at Bao Ninh secondary school, where she taught for 35 years.

They act just like they did when they were her students, which makes the retired teacher happy.

“I often come here to take part in Hiep’s plaster painting. I used to be her student. I’m so happy every time I see her,” Nguyen Thuy Lan, a ninth grade student, said.
