Overall wrap-up meeting on coastal cities sustainable environment project

Mr. Le Duy Hung, Head of WB's delegation, Head of the project; and Mr. Nguyen Huu Hoai, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee presided over the meeting. The meeting was attended by Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Xuan Quang together with representatives of central agencies and leaders of the three coastal central provinces of Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan.
The coastal cities sustainable environment project is carried out in four cities, including: Dong Hoi in central Quang Binh province, Quy Nhon in south-central Binh Dinh province, Nha Trang in south-central Khanh Hoa province and Phan Rang in south-central Ninh Thuan province.
Most capital will be borrowed from the World Bank under a project recently approved by the government to protect the environment in central coastal cities.
$273 million will be ODA from the World Bank with reciprocal capital of $36.094 million from Vietnam. Of which, $58 million will be granted to Dong Hoi city.
The project will be expected to conduct from 2017 to 2022 with four main components, including sanitation facilities, urban connection, compensation and site clearances; institutional reform.
In the four cities, the project is expected to improve environmental conditions, enhance people's health by completing infrastructure, create an urban landscape and improve awareness of environmental protection.
Last year, Dong Hoi, Quy Nhon and Nha Trang were provided drainage, wastewater collection, treatment plants, and solid waste management facilities under the World Bank’s Coastal Cities Environmental Sanitation Project for Vietnam.
Over 800,000 residents benefited from improved solid waste management and about 250,000 were protected from flooding, 66,500 students received sanitation facilities at schools, and 8,452 poor families received funds to upgrade their toilets.

Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the provincial People's Committee stressed that the project has an important significance to the four coastal central provinces. Especially, it helps Dong Hoi city reduce environmental pollution and avoid the flooding in the central area of Dong Hoi city and create an green, fresh and beautiful urban landscape, contributing to promoting sustainale socio-economic development for the four coastal central provinces in general and Dong Hoi city in particular.
