Cloud hunting on the roof of Quang Tri
A new eco-trek on Mount Voi Mep in Quang Tri Province offers cloud hunters pristine forest, steep climbs and sweeping views across the Truong Son range.
Standing at more than 1,700 metres above sea level, Mount Voi Mep is often dubbed the roof of Quang Tri Province, where visitors can watch vast seas of rolling clouds blanket the forests below.

Voi Mep, also known as Ta Linh Son, and nearby Pa Thien lie within the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve and attract travellers seeking adventure and largely untouched nature.

Pa Thien peak, at 1,625 metres, is sometimes called the “mountain of the sky” for its height reaching into the clouds, while Voi Mep, at over 1,700 metres, is seen as the province’s rooftop.

The trek to Voi Mep’s summit is steep and winding, cutting through dense forest, moss-covered rocks and narrow streams.

Locals say the mountain’s name derives from its shape, which resembles a giant resting elephant when viewed from afar.

The ancient forest on Pa Thien and Voi Mep remains largely undisturbed, with moss-covered trees and rocks often veiled in mist and dotted with bright wildflowers that glow in the morning light.

A local operator, working with Quang Tri authorities, has launched a pilot eco-trek linking Pa Thien and Voi Mep, offering two routes: a 6.5 kilometre, two-day trek and an 8.8 kilometre, three-day option.

From Voi Mep’s summit, visitors can watch clouds roll over the mountains almost year-round and enjoy sweeping views of wind farms dotted along the Truong Son range.

The initiative not only gives visitors a chance to explore the wilderness but also helps promote Quang Tri’s tourism potential and create livelihoods for local communities, a representative from the tour operator said.
