The new lizard species has the scientific name Cyrtodactylus hangvaensis. This species is locally called Hang Va toed gecko, because it was discovered in Va cave.

Accordingly, recently, the Management Board of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park (Quang Binh) said that a new species of lizard has just been discovered in Va cave by Vietnamese scientists.

It is known that the research team accidentally discovered Va cave-toed lizards clinging to the cliffs at nightfall.

This new species of lizard is nearly 13cm in size with big eyes, a triangular head, and a green color. This is the 4th species of lizard discovered in the World Natural Heritage Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.

The Va cave toed gecko was described in the biodiversity research project at Son Doong cave, led by Associate Professor. Dr. Vu Van Lien (Deputy General Director of Vietnam Museum of Nature), is the director.

Discovered a new species of lizard, a wild animal at Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Quang Binh province

Va cave area is the first and only place to date to find this wild animal. The research was published in Zootaxa, an international scientific journal for taxonomists.

Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park is home to an extremely diverse and rich fauna and flora with 2.953 species of plants and 1.394 species of wild animals.

Among them, there are 43 species newly discovered for science and many rare species, indicator species for the forest ecosystem on limestone mountains.

In August 8, scientists will have a specific report to the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board on the topic of biodiversity research at Son Doong cave.
