Quang Binh receives recognition of Hoang Phuc pagoda as national historical relic and Lord Buddha's sarira

(Quang Binh Portal) - On January 16, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) in coordination with the Provincial People"s Committee and the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) held a ceremony to open Hoang Phuc pagoda, welcome the recognition of Hoang Phuc pagoda as a national historical relic and receive Lord Buddha"s sarira from Myanmar"s Shwendagon pagoda.
Among representatives attending the ceremony included Minister of Justice Ha Hung Cuong; Professor and Labor Hero Vu Khieu; Chairman of the Board of Directors of BIDV Tran Bac Ha; Most Venerable Thich Thien Nhon, Chairman of the VBS Executive Council together with representatives of government officials, members of the Buddhist Sanghas of Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia and Buddhist followers across Vietnam.

On the side of Quang Binh province, the ceremony was attended by Mr. Luong Ngoc Binh, Member of the Central Party Committee; Mr. Hoang Dang Quang, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Council; Mr. Tran Cong Thuat, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; Mr. Nguyen Huu Hoai, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee together with members of the Standing Committees of the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee and Fatherland Front Committee; representatives of related departments and branches, localities and hundreds of people in Le Thuy district.

Located in Thuan Trach village, My Thuy commune, Le Thuy district, Hoang Phuc pagoda, as known as Kinh Thien or Quan Pagoda, is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Vietnam's central region with its long history of over 700 years. It is not only the Buddhist worshipping place but also a cultural and historical center in the country.

The pagoda has total area of nearly 10,000 m2, 04 km from the central area of Le Thuy district on the south. The pagoda has been rebuilt several times. It was severely devasted by a tropical hurricane in 1985, nothing much remained but the gate and the foundation of the temple.

With the pagoda's historical values, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision to rank Hoang Phuc pagoda as a provincial historical relic on June 1st 2010 and the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism recognized Hoang Phuc pagoda as a national historical relic on December 9, 2015.

The recognition is a firm foundation to restore and reconstruct the pogada, contributing to preserving and developing national cultural traditions as well as educating the local people in Le Thuy district of national pride and patriotism, and promoting local religious and spiritual lives.

The reconstruction and restoration of Hoang Phuc pagoda was started in November 30th 2014, with an estimated cost of over VND 55.5 billion raised from the capital source of socialization, in which BIDV is known as a main sponsor. It’s reported the main facilities of Hoang Phuc pagoda have been basically completed after nearly 14 months of reconstruction.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee thanked ministries, central agencies, government officals, BIDV, units and individuals for assistance in reconstruction and restoration of Hoang Phuc pagoda. Chairman affirmed this is a regilious cultural address, meeting the spiritual demand of local people and tourists to Quang Binh.

In order to promote historical values of Hoang Phuc pagoda, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee asked related agencies and Le Thuy district to strengthen propaganda on Cultural Heritage Law to protect, preserve and promote national historical and cultural values of Hoang Phuc pagoda.

Besides, the people in Le Thuy district, especially in My Thuy commune, the Management Board of Hoang Phuc pagoda and local authorities need to research and restore folk activities, introduce and popularize non-material cultural values, link popularization of cultural heritage value of Hoang Phuc pagoda with a series of religious and historical tourism activities in the province, contributing to attracting tourists, developing trade name and promoting socio-economic development.

On this occasion, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee awarded certificate of merit to 36 collectives and 9 families and individuals for their great contributions to reconstruction and restoration of Hoang Phuc pagoda. BIDV also presented 2,000 gifts to poor households in the province, supported VND300 million for Le Thuy district and Hoang Phuc pagoda to hold the festival in the early year; presented 01 ambulance, worth VND1.2 billion to the province.

Earlier, the VBS and the Provincial People's Committee held a ceremony to receive the Lord Buddha's sarira. The sarira, the relics left over after the physical bodies of the Buddha and eminent monks were cremated, was earlier worshiped at Shawedagon pagoda - the biggest pagoda in Myanmar - in Yangon city.
