President Triet delivered this message at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Vietnam Sea and Island Festival in the central province of Quang Binh on June 4.

The State leader stressed that the 21st century is considered the century of oceans and coastal countries around the world have attached importance to seas and the formulation of marine strategies.

As a country boasting large territorial waters in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has built its own marine strategy through 2020, identifying major issues and challenges amidst globalisation to maintain peace, stability and prosperity in the region, he said.

President Triet emphasised the need to improve both public awareness and state management of sea and islands and well exploit marine resources to serve people’s life combined with environmental protection.

At the ceremony, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment launched a contest to honour organisations and individuals for their outstanding contributions to the protection and development of sea and islands.

The festival is part of the 2010 Vietnam Sea and Island Week from June 1-8, which also includes a trade fair, a sand-painting contest and a seminar on biodiversity.
