Prime Minister asked Quang Binh Province People’s Committee to cooperate with the ministries of Health, Transport and Public Security to take care of the injured and search for the missing, help the victims’ families, repair the consequences of the accident and stabilize the situation as soon as possible. In order to share the losses and contribute to overcome the consequences of the accident, State President Nguyen Minh Triet donated to VND5 million for each deceased person.

The incident occurred at 07am, January 25, when the ferryboat was travelling from Quang Hai commune to Quang Thanh commune in Quang Trach district to shop for some food for the traditional lunar New Year holiday. The accident killed 42 people. The initial cause of the accident was defined that the owner of the boat overloaded and didn't comply with waterway traffic regulations. According to decision of the register of shipping, dated December 25 2008, of the Quang Binh Department of Transport, this boat’s approved capacity was about 12 people, but at the time the boat was carrying nearly 80 people.

The Quang Binh People's Committee quickly donated VND3 million to the bereaved for the funeral services and initially gave VND500 thousand to each survivor.
