Workshop on promoting landmines clearance and victim assistance integrated in local socio-economic development strategy

(Quang Binh Website) - A workshop on promoting landmines clearance and victim assistance integrated in local socio-economic development strategy was held in Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province on October 31.

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs; leaders of relevant agencies and localities of Quang Binh province; the Military Command of Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Ha Tinh provinces.

At present, the country still has over 6.6 million hectares of landmine infected area, making up over 21% of a total area. Quang Binh province alone suffers an average of around 29kg of different landmines a square meter of land and has more than 10,000 disable people who are bomb and mine victims sharing a difficult circumstance.

At the workshop, participants spent more time to discuss on the national action programme on handling the post-war consequences of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO); situation of landmine clearance and victim assistance integrated in local socio-economic development; supporting activities for landmine victims of the Association for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (AEPD) and evaluation of landmine pollution and effect to the people’s life.
