Vietnamese veteran hero receives aid to build house
Vietnam Veterans Association in the north-central province of Quang Binh together with a team of reporters handed over VND136 million (US$6,506) to Mai Xuan Hai, a veteran who fought to protect Gac Ma Island in Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago in 1988.
On March 14, 1988, Mai Xuan Hai was illegally arrested from Leizhou Peninsula under China and held for three years. His only crime was that he was trying to protect Gac Ma Island which belongs to Vietnam's Truong Sa Archipelago.
After his release he returned to his hometown and subsequently married, but has since faced a lot of financial difficulties and had been struggling to make a living.
The donation money was collected from hundreds of reporters, veterans, doctors, teachers and others from across the country for Hai to build a new house in Lien Trach Commune of Bo Trach District.
The new house is expected to be inaugurated on War Invalids and Martyrs Day on July 27 this year.
