The event was attended by Mr. Nguyen Huu Hoai, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Mr. Tran Van Tuan, Chairman of the Provincial Vietnamese Fatherland Front Committee; Mr. Truong An Ninh, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council; representatives of agencies and provincial-level unions; leaders of Le Thuy district and thousands of local people and tourists.

This is the 54th time the traditional boat racing festival on Kien Giang River has been held.

This year's festival drew the participation of 24 male teams and 8 female teams with more than 1,000 athletes from communes and town of Le Thuy district, including: Loc Thuy, Phong Thuy, Lien Thuy, An Thuy, Xuan Thuy, Mai Thuy, My Thuy, Phu Thuy and Kien Giang town.

Twenty-four male boats were divided into two parts: part A (12 boats), and part B (12 boats).The racing route is about 24km for male boats and 18km for female boats.

Beating drum to open the festival

From early in the morning, thousands of local people and tourists gathered along the two banks to enjoy and cheer loudly the race teams.

After more than two hours of an exciting competition with high determination and outstanding breakthroughs in the cheer of thousands of spectators, the traditional boat racing festival on Kien Giang River ended successfully.

As a result, Loc An village (An Thuy commune) stood the whole group most, An Xa village (Loc Thuy commune) came second and third of that of Dai Phong village (Phong Thuy commune).

Regarding the male boats, the first prizes were given to My Thuy commune and Tuy Loc village (Loc Thuy commune), second prizes to Phu Thuy commune and Loc Thuong village (An Thuy commune) and third prizes to Dai Phong village (Phong Thuy commune) and Xuan Hoi village (Lien Thuy commune) for the part A and B respectively.

Regarding the female boats, team of Tuy Loc village (Loc Thuy commune) won the first prize, Dai Phong village (Phong Thuy commune) won the second and Thuong Phong village (Phong Thuy commune) came the third.

The boat racing festival on Kien Giang River is one of the old cultural activities, associated with the cultural and spiritual life of the local residents and becomes a traditional cultural character of Le Thuy people.

The festival was recognised as a provincial-level culture and sport festival in 2003 by the Provincial People's Committee. The festival aims to effectively implement the Campaign "All people unite to build cultural life in residential areas"; expand and improve quality of local sport movement. This is also an opportunity to popularise the images on land and people of Le Thuy district - the motherland of General Vo Nguyen Giap to domestic and foreign friends.

Earlier, the authority and people of Le Thuy district held a ceremony to anounce Ho khoan Le Thuy recognised as national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture - Sport and Tourism.
