Death toll rises to 46 after 2nd flood in central Vietnam
Ha Tinh has had the highest fatalities reported with 21, followed by Nghe An with 16, Quang Binh with 8 and Thanh Hoa with 1.
By early October 20, rain had stopped in provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue, but still continued in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces.
According to a report from the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control, as of 5:00pm on October 19, up to 183 communes in Ha Tinh province were inundated, 12 in Nghe An and 27 in Quang Binh.
The Ministry of Transport said many sections on National Highway 1A and the Ho Chi Minh Highway are still underwater with a number of them even swept away.
The National Committee for Search and Rescue has assigned 20,000 soldiers and policemen, militiamen and used 312 motor-boats and canoes as well as one helicopter for relief activities in the flood zones.
Ha Tinh province has evacuated 68,000 people while Nghe An and Quang Binh have moved over 12,000 and 11,000 residents respectively to safe places.
The authorities in Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces have proposed the government to provide 5,000 tonnes of rice each; 1,316 tonnes of seed rice and maize, 390 tonnes of seed vegetables, potatoes and medicines.
These localities are also seeking for a combined financial assistance of VND2.83 trillion ($145.12 million) for locals to stabilise their lives.
