The Dark Grotto, which belongs to the Phong Nha Cave system, is 5,258m long and 80m high. It is also the home to thousands of stalactites in various shapes and colours as well as several indigenous species of bat and swallow.
Site managers said that the zipline is a new form of tourism which is opened in the Phong Nha - Ke Bang for the first time. It will run above the Chay River into Toi (Dark) Cave, allowing tourists to slide into the cave, swim in the clear and cool waters of the river or indulge in fun acrobatics along the route.
The hiking race will be developed into an annual event to make use of the natural advantages of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, making a breakthrough in diversifying the forms of tourism in Quang Binh, drawing tourists, especially international tourists.
According to the Phong Nha - Ke Bang Tourism Center, the park received more than 3,500 tourists, during the first four days of Tet (Vietnam’s New Year) starting last Friday, up 30 percent from last year’ same period, of which international visitors increased by 25 percent.
This Tet (Lunar New Year) festival marked the reopening of Tien Son Cave to tourists, after ten-month hiatus for a VND15 billion (US$713,000) installation of floors and lights.
The mouth of Tien Son Cave is 1,000m from the mouth of Phong Nha Cave which is also known as the Water Grotto or Lower Phong Nha while Tien Son is known as the Dry Grotto or Upper Phong Nha.
