Coastal Central Region Sustainable Development Forum opened

(Quang Binh Website) - Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Huu Hoai attended the forum on sustainable development of Coastal Central Vietnam held by the Ministry of Planning and Investment in collaboration with the World Bank and Quang Nam province in Hoi An City on June 3.

During the past ten years, nine provinces and cities in the coastal central region attending the forum has received over 2.5 billion VND from development partners. At present, the programs and projects under implementation in the region have a total capital of about US$1.83 billion.

According to the overall goal, the central coastal region will be developed into a important hub with dynamic, fast and sustainable development to enhance international cooperation, maintain political stability and social order, develop the marine economy along with ensuring national defence, security and sovereignty over sea and islands.

However, it is still considered a low developed region with poor infrastructure. It faces many challenges for its sustainable development, such as modest investment, unfavorable weather condition, and water shortage. These programs and projects will contribute to improving the people's life; strengthening poverty alleviation for the people, especially ethnic minority people; speeding up healthcare for the people; reducing the minimun impacts of natural disasters such as storm, flood, and drought; protecting ecological environment and dealing with climate change effectively.

At the forum, participants focused on discussing how to intensify social-economic development in harmony with environmental protection, to strengthen connectivity of transport infrastructure for socio-economic development in the new context, to reduce poverty rate in the sustainable manner, and to use water resources in a sustainable manner, managing and mitigating the risks of natural disasters and coping with climate change in the central coastal area.

The forum is an opportunity for participants to share experiences in mobilizing human resources, managing risks and natural disaster and water resource sustainbly to develop potential and promote economic development and poverty alleviation.
