Receiving and working with the British Ambassador in Vietnam

(Quang Binh Portal) - On the morning of November 19, 2020, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People"s Committee Nguyen Tien Hoang received and worked with the British Ambassador to Vietnam Gareth Ward. Attending the meeting were leaders of Department of Foreign Affairs, Office of Provincial People"s Committee and the Provincial Red Cross Association.

At the meeting, on behalf of the provincial leaders, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee (PPC) informed about the situation of 2 consecutive floods, especially the record flooding from October 16-22, causing serious damage in the whole province. Flooding had killed 25 people and injured 197.183 villages/33 communes were divided by floods; 106,220 households were submerged; 1,734 houses were damaged, of which 104 houses were completely destroyed. Many buildings and offices were eroded and damaged, food was swept away. Quang Ninh and Le Thuy districts were hardest-hit by floods. Total value of damage in the whole province in both floods was estimated at VND 3,511,674 billion. As of November 17, 2020, the total amount and goods to aid people in Quang Binh floodplain of organizations, individuals, and philanthropists through the Provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee was VND 102.5 billion; through the Provincial Red Cross Association was VND 80 billion.

The Vice Chairman of PPC also acknowledged and highly valued the UK's support and cooperation in Quang Binh in recent years. In which, the British Embassy in Vietnam and a number of British NGOs have supported the implementation of programs and projects in Quang Binh related to the clearance of bombs, mines and explosives, maternal and child health care… In particular, the Royal Cave Association and Mr. Howard Limbert and his wife assisted Quang Binh to search and explore caves, contribute to promote local image around the world. In order to effectively overcome the damage caused by floods, he asked the British Embassy to support Quang Binh in repairing damaged schools and medical stations, upgrading irrigation works; especially to support people to restore and stabilize production such as plants, seedlings, machines for agricultural production, treatment of polluted water, environmental sanitation…

The British Ambassador to Vietnam highly appreciated the efforts and solidarity of the Vietnamese people in general and Quang Binh people in preventing and minimizing losses inflicted by floods and epidemics. At the same time, the UK has recently announced GBP500,000 in aid to support people affected by recent storms and floods in Vietnam. The aid will be transferred to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies through the British Red Cross, helping to provide more accommodations, clean water and food, and support livelihoods for about 160,000 calamity-hit people in Viet Nam.

In addition, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is partnering with Population Services International (PSI) and Unilever Group to implement the project "Mobilizing the private sector’s engagement in meeting the public health events” in communes/towns of Quang Ninh and Le Thuy districts. This project includes the provision of disinfectant products and essential medicines, focusing on prevention and control of waterborne diseases, strengthening monitoring and reporting systems of cases arising after floods at commune health stations, private medical examination and treatment and pharmaceutical business establishments according to the Event Based Surveillance guidance issued by the Ministry of Health.

Immediately after the meeting, the British Ambassador to Vietnam visited Tan Ninh commune in Quang Ninh district and Son Thuy commune in Le Thuy district.
