SE Asia 2013: Phong Nha - West country
Well well well! First impressions of Phong Nha weren’t great.. Wickedgood nature and that, but caught a taxi with two others (nice English journalist couple) from our train to their arranged homestay as we weren’t 100% sure of where we should go, the place we planned on staying was full!
First noticed that in this place, the double beds are separated by a curtain.. bit odd but fair enough. Next, turns out that you have to make toilet on a bed of rice in a bucket and then cover it with more rice (fine, I obviously wasn’t gonna not go because of that). THEN found that there was another door in the rice-bog with no lock leading to the beds - *Enter lady from the couple, stage right*. I was only aware of this door after she walked in. You notice that relationships are accelerated, sometimes uncomfortably, whilst travelling.. But one hour taxi ride later and she had witnessed me chopping one off and I stil don’t know her name. I guess it’s better that way.
Moved on to Easy Tiger hostel, with running water, locks and a restaurant; this pleases me. Real good service as they are only a month or so old, and even got a private dorm room cause the guy seemed to be checking people into separate dorms. Bargain! Spent first day at the bar (they have 3 consecutive happy hours, total lashfest) and saw a river crystal cave by boat. Second was spent on a long ass tour of more caves, swimming in river rapids n jungles n stuffs.. S’alright! Frank decided she was too cool for a life jacket at the swimming and took the one off that i forced her to wear, before getting warned and whistled at by the guard . Obvs this ended in uncontrollable levels of smug. Almost werent charged for the tour but decided to go back and do the right thing, and we were offered 2 free rum and cokes for our honesty! I’m such a lad.
Not a luxurious place for a relaxing holiday but a nice rural area for something different, and quite a lot of war history also. Frankie dropped a hell of a question with "How do the vietnamese feel about the Americans now?" .. Tour guide said normal and no hostility, but then a German girl on the tour said yeah I think it’s the same as with us and world war two", and KABOOMM. This was most definitely against Basil Fawlty’s rules of conversation.
Moved on once again, finished this post on our unholy o’clock bus towards Hoi An! Been here a day and a bit already but will save info for the next post, as I’ve chuffed on a bit already. You stay classy, San Diego.
