US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also offered condolences to the victims of central flood-hit provinces.

“On behalf of President Barack Obama and the people of the United States, I offer our condolences for the destruction and loss of life caused by heavy rains and flooding in Vietnam. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people of Vietnam, especially those affected by this tragedy,” Mrs. Clinton said in a statement.

The same day, international organizations including Plan International, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), CARE in Vietnam, Challenge to Change and others will provide more than US345, 000 to support the emergency response activities of the People's Aid Coordinating Committee (PACCOM) of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) in Hanoi.

In response to a program titled ““For the central flood victims” by the Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper, Phu My Hung Joint Venture Company offered VND50 million (US$2,500) for the worst-hit families in Quang Binh Province.

The newspaper also provided five tons of rice to the the most heavily damaged places in the province o­n October 12.

Over VND600 million (US$30,000) was collected from the staff of the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (VietinBank) in Hanoi for support for disaster victims in the central Vietnam.

Thousands of wells and sanitary works in the worst-hit districts including Huong Khe and Vu Quang, Ha Tinh Province are seriously polluted.

More than 1,707 residents have red sore eye and 1,458 with cutaneous disease, according to Mr. Pham Van Khang, Director of theHuong Khe District’s Preventive Health Center.

The areas may also face risks of hunger, he added.

Director of the Education and Training Department of Quang Binh province said that over 1,000 classrooms were submerged in the flood, five students died and some were injured in the flood. It is estimated that losses caused to the education sector by the flood is more than VND83 bliion (US$4.4 million). Around 30,000 students cannot go to school. They may return to school after October 20.
