Vietnam to build road accident rescue centers

Nine road accident rescue centers will be built in nine provinces with a total cost of VND180 billion (US$8.75 million) under a project of the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam (DRV).

The project, which is subject to approval of the Ministry of Transport, will be developed from now until 2015 on the state budget, DRV said.

Of the 9 centers, three will be set up on National Highway 1 in Ninh Binh, Quang Binh and Phu Yen provinces, and the remaining six on the Ho Chi Minh Road in Nghe An province and on National Highway 3, 5, 6, 14 and 18 in Bac Kan, Hai Duong, Dien Bien, Kon Tum, and Quang Ninh provinces respectively.

The first three centers will be built on a pilot basis in Bac Kan’s Ngan Son District, Quang Binh’s Quang Trach District, and Phu Yen’s Tuy Hoa City next year, with a total cost of over VND98 billion and will be put into operation in the second quarter of 2012.

In the first 6 months of this year, more than 23,000 road accidents occurred across the country, killing 5,662 people and injuring more than 25,600 others, the Road and Railway Traffic Police Department reported.

The country has nearly 1,000 people killed and 4,000 others wounded in road accidents everyday on average, the department said.
