PPC meeting in reference to the socio-economic development master plan for the buffer-zone of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park

(Quang Binh Website) - The provincial People's Committee (PPC) on November 29 held a meeting to hear the progress report on the socio-economic development master plan for the buffer-zone of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park (PNKB NP). PPC Vice-chairperson Tran Van Tuan, head of the Steering Committee of PNKB region project presided over the meeting.

Surrounding the PNKB National Park, with an area of 225,000 hectares is its buffer zone, consisting of 13 surrounding communes within the three districts of Bo Trach, Minh Hoa and Quang Ninh with about 12,820 households in 157 buffer zone villages.

The overall objective of the bufferzone development plan is to contribute to the conservation of the Northern Annamite Region, with efforts to protect biodiversity and ecological services within PNKB complemented with planning activities to promote sustainable socio-economic development in its buffer zone areas.

The buffer zone development plan focused on the assessment of regional threats towards the biodiversity values of the national park; analysis on climate change proofing and buffer zone development plan; general assessment of livelihood dependence to park resources and so on.

Addressing the meeting, Vice-chairperson Tran Van Tuan suggested that the Project Management Unit (PMU) should have a close combination with AHT and GIZ consulting offices to build up the PNKB buffer zone development master plan.

The PMU need to report on situation of its operation in the past time and its relationship with AHT and GIZ, Vice-chairperson Tuan added.

Head of the Project Steering Committee also stressed that the plan should specify boundaries of 13 buffer zone communes within PNKB National Park.
