Vietnam funded research of building Viet-Laos friendship railway

Deputy Director of the Laos Railway Authority, Sonesack N.Ngansana said that Vietnamese and Laos officials will conduct research on a project to run a railway from Thakhet town of Khammouan provinces in Laos to Quang Binh province in Vietnam.

According to Mr. Ngansana, the research grant has been funded by Vietnam and the research will take 10 month to complete.

The friendship railway will run for 150 km coming across many mountains and through many forests. The large number of tunnels headed has pushed up the cost of the project to 350 million US dollars.

According to the Vietnam government, the Ministry of Transportation assigned the Vietnam Railway to establish the investment report for the project of newly building this railway.

According to the Laos government, the project is in the Gang Mekong Sub-region development program; therefore regional financial organizations will be able to sponsor it. The friendship railway will end some areas being isolated, and help them with integration as well as playing an important role in Laos’s economic and social development.
