A ceremony to mark the World Environment Day, the International Day of Biodiversity, the Vietnam Sea and Island Week and the International Year of Forest and to kick off the 2011 Youth Summer Volunteer Campaign

(Quang Binh Website) - A ceremony to mark the World Environment Day (June 5), the International Day of Biodiversity (May 22), the Vietnam Sea and Island Week (June 1-8) and the International Year of Forest and to kick off the 2011 Youth Summer Volunteer Campaign was held on May 28 in the Provincial Center for Culture and Information.

The event was jointly organized by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Quang Binh provincial Youth Union with the participation of Standing Vice-chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Xuan Quang; representative of departments and branches and more than 900 members and youths in the province.

Addressing the ceremony, representative of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment stressed that the protection of the environment, biodiversity and ocean is a global issue, and it is one of the factors decisive to a country’s success of maintaining sustainable development, political stability and national security. Year 2011 is chosen as the International Year of Forest by the United Nation. In response to this activity, the theme of the World Environment Day this year is "Forest: Value of life is from nature" and  the Vietnam Sea and Island Week is "Green Brainpower for Sustainable Development of Vietnam’s Sea and Islands", aiming at calling upon all people, especially youths to protect the environment, biodiversity and the sea, and tackle global climate change.

On behalf of provincial leaders, Standing Vice-chairman Nguyen Xuan Quang asked all authorities, organizations, enterprises and people to respond and take actions for a sustainable, safe and pure living environment. He stressed that all officials, civil-servants and youth union members should pay more attention to raising everyone’s awareness of environmental protection and turn their understanding into practical deeds.

Granting medical equipment to the representatives of communes

On this occasion, the Vietnam Youth Union granted medical equipment to five communes, including Quang Van (Quang Trach), Truong Xuan, Truong Son (Quang Ninh) and Ngu Thuy Bac, Ngu Thuy Trung (Le Thuy) with a total value of VND50 million.

After the ceremony, youth union members took part in the parade and cleaned sanitation in some areas in the province.
