Quang Binh Red Cross: partially sum up first phase of the community based disaster preparedness Project

(Quang Binh Website) - The Provincial Red Cross has recently made an a-year preliminary summing-up of implementing the community based disaster preparedness Project and deployed the action plan for the second phase.

The community based disaster preparedness Project funded by the European Commission and Netherlands Red Cross is divided into three phases: first phase from March 2007 to February 2008; second phase from March 2008 to February 2009 and third phase from March 2009 to February 2010. The project's objective is to reduce impact of natural disaster in vulnerable communities in Vietnam by strengthening preparedness and response capacity. Quang Binh province has eight communes of four districts in the project location, namely: Canh Duong, Quang Phu, Canh Hoa, Quang Tan and Quang Van (Quang Trach); My Trach (Bo Trach); Hai Ninh (Quang Ninh) and An Thuy (Le Thuy).

As a result, after one year of implementing, 50% local people in the project location was aware of vulnerable situation to disaster relating to climate change. Thenceforth, local authorities improved the capacity of coping with the disaster, found solutions to adapt, carried out training course and provided equipments for brigades/rescue teams in localities… The total expenditure of the project is over VND1.111 million, of which VND902 million of donors and VND209 million of local authorities.
