Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee receives the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam

(Quang Binh Portal) - On April 01, 2025, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Phong chaired a courtesy call to receive the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper, within his working visit to Quang Binh province. The courtersy call was also attended by representatives from relevant departments and agencies.

Overview of the reception of the US Ambassador to Vietnam

At the courtersy call, Ambassador Marc Knapper expresses his pleasure to visit and work in Quang Binh. He emphasized that 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relation between Vietnam and the United States, a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship. Over the years, both sides have made efforts to address war legacies, such as demining, searching for missing U.S. soldiers, and promoting cooperation in locating missing Vietnamese citizens from the war, as well as supporting people with disability in Vietnam. These are crucial factors in fostering reconciliation and strengthening mutual understanding between the two countries.

Ambassador Marc Knapper also mentioned that, previously, the U.S. Government had paused funding mine action projects in some areas of Vietnam; however, these projects have been soon restored. During this visit to Quang Binh, he wanted to observe how these programs and projects have been restored and are currently operating, as well as to encourage those involved in these acitivities. The Ambassador also expressed a desire for Quang Binh to share potential areas of cooperation for future partnership. Ambassador Knapper reaffirmed the U.S. Government's commitment to continue supporting Vietnam in general and Quang Binh in particular, in addressing war legacies through specific activities aimed at healing the wounds of the past, based on the principles of being honest with history and working together towards a prosperous future.

The Ambassador also mentioned that this was his second official visit to Quang Binh. During his previous visit, he had the opportunity to visit and lay flowers in memory of General Vo Nguyen Giap at the General's memorial house in Le Thuy district; notably, he had met General Giap in 2004. On this return visit, he expressed his wish to visit General Vo Nguyen Giap's resting place at Vung Chua - Yen Island.

Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Tran Phong, on behalf of the provincial leadership, affirmed that Ambassador Marc Knapper’s activities in Quang Binh demonstrate the affection and interest that the US Government have given to the people of Quang Binh province. Over the years, the partnership between the two sides has been increasingly strengthened and expanded through many specific activities, achieving significant results, particularly in mine action area. Additionally, there have been many cultural and educational exchange activities conducted at schools in the province. Quang Binh province has also received significant attention and support from the U.S. Government, the U.S. Embassy, and U.S. agencies and organizations through funding and supporting humanitarian programs and projects in fields of education, healthcare, and biodiversity conservation.

The Chairman stated that although the natural conditions are not favorable, Quang Binh is blessed with many famous landcapes that cannot be found anywhere else, particularly the UNESCO World Heritage site Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and the Son Doong cave, which have been recognized globally. Over the years, major U.S. media agencies have featured programs, live broadcasts, and highly ranked the province’s tourist destinations, helping to promote Quang Binh to the people of the United States and international tourists. He suggested that the Ambassador support introducing U.S. investors to explore and invest in Quang Binh, continue promoting Quang Binh’s image globally, and continue to assist the province in implementing mine action programs and projects.

Immediately after the reception, the US Ambassador and the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and the delegation visited General Vo Nguyen Giap’s grave at Vung Chua - Yen Island, Quang Dong commune, Quang Trach district.
