Kick-off workshop on building an Integrated Flood Management Plan - Project for building disaster resilient societies in Vietnam

(Quang Binh Website) – The Quang Binh Provincial People’s Committee in coordination with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on July 25 held a kick-off workshop on building an Integrated Flood Management Plan (IFMP) under the Project for building disaster resilient societies in Vietnam.

The workshop was attended by representatives of the General Department of Irrigation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Vietnam Irrigation Science Institute, and the University of Irrigation, leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Thua Thien Hue provinces.

The Project for building disaster resilient societies in Vietnam for second phase is funded by JICA with a total investment of JPY393 million (equivalently $4.17 million).
The project aims at strengthening the capacity for integrated flood management planning and implementation of IFMP at the central level and in targeted provinces, including Nghe An, Quang Binh, Ha Tinh and Thua Thien – Hue.

In Quang Binh, the project has been started from August of 2013 and is expected to last to July of 2016.

The project focuses on implementation of surveys at grass root level, analysis of flows and simulation of floods for the formulation of IFMP, building flood hazard maps and analysis of the impact of natural disasters; construction and approval for IFMP in Quang Binh; the projects of small-scale low cost construction against riverbank erosion; handbook for management and operation of dams and reservoirs; community-based disaster risk management; disaster education in the province...

At the workshop, delegates listened to an expert of JICA presenting the concept of IFMP, Japan’s experience in IFMP, orientations for building IFMP, and progress of operations relating to IFMP in Quang Binh.

The workshop also heard the report of obtained results of the project for first phase in Thua Thien Hue, and shared experience in IFMP, community – based disaster risk management and small-scale low cost construction against riverbank erosion, aiming at helping Quang Binh successfully implement the building of IFMP in the coming time.
