Humanitarian surgery week for children’s smiles opens in Quang Binh
The programme was carried out by top-ranking experts of Vietnam in odonto and stomatology from the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology in coordination with Smile Train – an US non-governmental organisation that provides free cleft lip and palate repair surgery to children.
Accordingly, 28 children with cleft lips and palates in Quang Binh will be received free surgeries funded by Smile Train.
Most of patients will be provided a free support for surgery, medicine and other medical costs. The Quang Binh Provincial Children Sponsoring Fund will support all costs of transport and food during the period of hospitalization.
This humanitarian surgery will an opportunity for children to find their own face and integrate into the community, helping to bringing smiles to unlucky children. This is also a good opportunity for doctors of the Vietnam – Cuba Dong Hoi Hospital to exchange experience to improve professional skills on odonto and stomatology.
Cleft lips and palates are facial and oral malformations that occur very early in pregnancy, while the baby is developing inside the mother. Clefting results when there is not enough tissue in the mouth or lip area, and the tissue that is available does not join together properly.
